Board handles routine business at June meeting
BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio – The Ohio Hi-Point Career Center Board of Education met for their regular monthly meeting Wednesday evening in the Hi-Point Inn for a meeting that included routine business in preparation for the upcoming 2010/11 school year.
Amy Main, who has served as the program coordinator of the Nancy J. Knight School of Nursing in Adult Education received a one-year limited contract to serve as Adult Education Supervisor. As Main assumes her new administrative role, long-time Adult Education employee Julia Barton, who currently serves as Student Services Coordinator, resigned for the purposes of retirement effective August 31, 2010.
In the high school, the board accepted the resignation of Melissa Rofe, English Instructor, effective June 30, 2010, for other employment in another district. Former Ohio HI-Point Career Center student Cory Calland was approved to join the staff as an Assistant Technology Coordinator during the 2010/11 school year. The board also approved a public notice regarding a public hearing to be held during the July 28, 2010 Board of Education meeting to consider rehiring Deborah Baker, retired instructor, into the same position effective September 1, 2010.
Lori Ludwig and Julia Barton were on hand at the meeting to deliver an update to the board on the status of Adult Education’s on-going accreditation process with the North Central Association and the Office of Student Services. Ludwig reported good news on the findings of the accreditation’s findings, listing Ohio Hi-Point’s Adult and Continuing Education Division in the two highest earning categories in all seven areas of measurement.
Barton reported that 85% of current full-time Adult Education students were receiving financial aid, being managed through the Office of Student Services.

• Approved the report of the treasurer
• Heard the legislative liaison report from board member Warren Stevens (Urbana City Schools)
• Adopted the Annual Appropriation Resolution for the period of July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011, in the amount of $16,189,759 and authorized the Treasurer, the Superintendent and the Board President to sign certificates certifying the availability of funds to cover the annual appropriations measure

• Approved the employment of Jeff Cross to a one-year limited contract, 4/8 (part-time) for Career Based Intervention and Ryan Gilbert as a Virtual Learning Academy Summer Camp Instructor
• Approved the following Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) volunteers for the 2010/11 school year: Stephen Phillip, Mela Patterson, LaGina Hill
• Approved the employment of the following ABLE instructors for the 2010/11 school year: Eldonna Ashley, Nancy Gillman, Amanda Hanford, Nancy Harmon, Linda Kerns, Jim King, Dave Ozimek, Cindy Price, Rachel Sheeley, Christen Smith, Mary Ann Smith, Sheryl Risner, Anita Slayer

• Designated Joel Staudter (Associate High School Director) and Shelly Swaney (Associate High School Director) as the non-discrimination designee for the district
• Appointed Board Vice President Bill Ramsey (Benjamin Logan) as the Ohio School Boards Association voting delegate for the 2010/11 school year and Jeff Burroughs (Madison-Champaign County ESC) as the alternate
• Approved a resolution for the district to cooperate in service areas for special education regional resource services
• Approved a monthly cell phone stipend for approved staff members of $50 for a standard phone and $100 for a “smart” phone
The next meeting of the board of education will be held on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at 7 p.m. in the Hi-Point Inn.
